When you switch broadband provider, most of the time absolutely nothing physical changes except the name on your bill. The internet is not a cloud. It's infrastructure.

And one company controls nearly all of it in the UK.

The Hook

You Think You're Buying Broadband. You're Renting Access.

Outside of Virgin Media's network (~52% of UK premises), approximately 95% of all fibre infrastructure is owned by Openreach.

The company whose name is on your bill probably doesn't own any of the pipes. They own only the customer relationship.

Context — The Copper Age

Victorian Telephone Wires Still Carry Your Data

The first telephone exchange in Britain opened in 1879. Copper wires from the 1880s still run under many UK streets today — over 140 years old.

Fibre optic cables are strands of glass thinner than human hair, carrying data at the speed of light. The shift from copper to fibre is not an upgrade. It is a generational shift.

Copper depends on distance. Fibre's speed is limited only by the electronics at each end.

Beyond Google

The fundamental reason copper limits broadband speed is electrical resistance. Higher frequencies are more susceptible to attenuation. Fibre optics lose only about 0.2 dB per kilometre. The technological ceiling of copper is a property of physics.

The Technology Split

FTTP vs FTTC: Why The Last Metre Matters

FTTP — Fibre to the Premises

Fibre runs all the way to the house. Speeds up to 10 Gbps. Cost: approximately £2,000–3,000 per premise.

Advantage: Future-proof. Speeds can increase without replacing the physical fibre.
FTTC — Fibre to the Cabinet

Fibre runs to a green cabinet on the street. The last mile is copper. Speeds fall steeply with distance.

Problem: Physical ceiling. The cabinet is a halfway house.

The Monopoly

Openreach Controls The Last Mile By Accident Of History

In 1881, the telephone network was nationalised. In 1984, BT was privatised, inheriting all the copper, all the ducts. When broadband emerged in the 1990s, BT owned the only copper network reaching most UK homes.

In 2021, Ofcom required Openreach to be structurally separated from BT by 2027. But Openreach still owns the infrastructure. The separation changes governance, not the fact that one company controls 95% of UK fibre infrastructure.

The Alternative

Virgin Media's Separate Network Covers 52% of UK

The result: a two-network UK. In Virgin Media areas, genuine choice exists. In areas without, customers face a monopoly on fibre.

The Global Network

Undersea Cables Are Thinner Than A Garden Hose

A typical modern submarine cable is roughly 17 mm in diameter. A single cable can carry terabits per second.

Beyond Google

Repairs to undersea cables take weeks. If a major cable is damaged, traffic reroutes across other cables. This redundancy is intentional — the internet's architecture assumes cables will break.

LINX (London Internet Exchange) handled 12 terabits per second of peak traffic in January 2026. The entire UK's international connectivity bottlenecks through these cables.

The Scheduled Disruption

Copper Dies in 2027

Openreach has committed to switching off copper-based telephone services and ADSL by 2027. Roughly 5% of UK premises — approximately 1.2 million — still rely on ADSL.

Affected premises by region: Scotland 8.2% still on ADSL, Wales 7.9%, Rural South West 6.8%, South East 1.2%, London 0.3%.

The Disruption

Starlink provides 50–150 Mbps with 25–50 ms latency, deployable anywhere with sky view. Cost: £449 upfront plus £89/month.

If satellite broadband reaches price parity with terrestrial fibre, it undermines the business case for building fibre to remote areas.

Beyond Google

Starlink's UK constellation requires 500+ satellites in polar orbits. The UK's radio telescopes at Jodrell Bank have already reported interference.

One Takeaway

Broadband feels competitive because there are ten companies selling it to you. The infrastructure beneath it is not competitive. Outside of Virgin Media's footprint, Openreach owns the pipes. You're choosing between retailers who rent from the same landlord.
